“Magical rehabilitation”

Magical rehabilitation describes pit bull owners, rescuers and trainers who claim to quickly “cure” a pit bull — eliminating the dog’s aggressive traits — after a serious mauling. A perfect example of magical rehabilitation occurred after James Harrison’s pit bull, who mauled three people in a single attack (a triple mauler), and within 20 days, was “cured” and ready for adoption by the public.

Somehow between May 30 and June 20 (about 20 days), the triple mauling dog now named Duke has been magically “rehabilitated” by Mary Kay Kain. The animal has gone from being a pit bull to an “American Bandogge Mastiff” and from being a triple mauler to a dog that “loves to sit back in your lap and get belly rubs and kisses on his head.”  – DogsBite.org

“Freak accident”

Owners of pit bulls often say after a serious or fatal pit bull attack that it was a “freak accident”. Google News Archives shows clear results of this when typing in the terms: freak accident pit bull. The term has been in continuous use by pit bull owners since 1985, after Wally Robert’s pit bull, named Napoleon, killed Deborah Pernell while she slept. The phrase is a complete denial of responsibility. Such occurrences are neither freak nor accidental when involving pit bulls. The fact that parents of victimized children and police authorities 25-years later still call such attacks “freak accidents” is regrettable and untrue.

The following is a “real” freak accident:

Woman killed in freak New York lift crush
A woman died in a New York City office building after lift doors dragged her upwards and crushed her.
Officials say the woman, identified as advertising agency employee Suzanne Hart, was attempting to enter the lift when her foot or leg became caught.
The car then quickly rose, dragging her body into the shaft and killing her … The accident happened at 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT), officials said, but medics were unable to reach her body immediately because she became stuck between the first and second floors. BBC News, December 2011

“Educate yourself!”

This term is frequently used by pit bull advocates to condemn persons who speak up about the inherent dangers of pit bulls. The term is expressed in a variety of ways, such as: Get educated, Do some education, I am an educator and Educate yourself. The mauling thread following a May story (Pit Bull Attacks Dog, Owner in Elliot City) is a classic example. The terms are used 15 times, here are just a few examples:

  • “You really need to get educated on dogs before you say anything”
  • “All I ask is you do some education on the breed”
  • “Should we ban the human. Come on people, get educated!”
  • “Get educated people, Petey from the little rascals was a pit bull”
  • “I am an educator with a masters degree and I own a pit bull!”
  • “Stop name calling and get some education!”
  • “This comment blog has turned into “educated” pit bull owners and breed experts trying to convince the “uneducated” non breed experts”

“Are you a biologist?”

As demonstrated by the question, “Are you a geneticist?” the similar question, “Are you a biologist?” comes up at the first mention of the pit bull breed’s genetic heritage. In a lovely YouTube video that depicts a pit bull owner egging his dog to “get it boy” (to continue clamping down on a rope), user “bizzo518” responds to a comment:

where did you pull your info????? are you a vet, dog behaviorist, biologist….or what…..the avg domestic dog bites at around 320psi, a german shepard, pitt, and rotty were tested….guess what the pitt generated the LEAST amount of psi….DONT TALK SHIT AND POST STUFF IF YOU ARE AN UNEDUCATED ASS………. – bizzo518

“Are you a geneticist?”

The term is often used by pit bull advocates to derail or condemn a person who mentions the genetic heritage of the pit bull breed, which was selectively bred for explosive aggression to “rule” the fighting pit. Dogfighters even took selective breeding further for the breed by selecting for the “gamest” dog, a dog that will fight to its death. A recent article published by the Commercial Appeal and authored by Tom Graves (My Thoughts: Pit bull epidemic requires passage of breed-specific ordinance) exemplifies this.

1) Are you a geneticist? Are you a biologist? No, you are a professor of literature. You have no scientific backing for any of your claims about “fighting DNA” or that one breed of dog is genetically unlike any other dog. In fact, you should know all about writing statements with no support. I’m sure you do not let your students get away with such claims. – PitBullOwner

“Dachshunds are more aggressive”

After a study was published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science in 2008, which showed that “sausage” dogs were the most aggressive breed, Maul Talkers took to the streets clamouring victory. The ridiculous study — which in no way measured the severity of the bite — is often used by Maul Talkers to show that dachshunds are more dangerous than pit bulls. It must be noted that the majority of pit bull owners are strongly anti-small dogs and particularly dislike Dachshunds.

I’ve found little dogs are more snappy… My Shih Tzu would bite you a lot quicker than any of the other dogs, and my bully will lick you to death, or knock you over leaning on you for a scratch…. my sister had 2 little ankle biters, and one of them would bite you if you even tried to pet it…. Of course, that means I’m PRO big dog, anti little dogMollie’s Nana

Every dachshund I’ve ever met has been mean. I’m sure there are nice ones out there…but I’ve yet to meet one in my personal experience, and I work with dogs everyday as a kennel assistant! It’s always the little breed dogs that are the meanest IMO. – Anonymous

In the 27-years that Merritt Clifton of Animal People has been tracking serious and fatal dog attacks, pit bulls caused serious bodily harm to 1,451 persons, maimed 777 and killed 153. Dachshunds on the other hand, caused serious bodily harm to 5 persons, maimed 5 and killed 1. The victim killed was an 81-year old invalid woman and the attack involved a pack of six dogs, of which at least two were dachshunds. (See: Attacks by Packs of Dogs Involving Predation on Human Beings).

“Pomeranians kill too!”

Maul Talkers like to point out the single instance since the Big Bang when a pomeranian dog killed a 6-week old baby. The pomeranian phrase is used to minimize the massive number of victims pit bulls have disfigured, maimed and killed since the late 1970s.

Pomeranian Kills 6-Week-Old
GirlSeptember 21, 2001
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A small Pomeranian dog killed a 6-week-old baby while the infant’s caretaker briefly left the child unattended to warm a bottle of milk, authorities said.
The relative, who was caring for the infant girl, found her head buried in the dog’s mouth Saturday night, sheriff’s Deputy Cruz Solis said. The girl died of head trauma at an area hospital, he said.
The baby’s name was withheld because her parents were out of the country and had not been notified, Solis said.
The relative has not been charged. Animal control officers took the dog.
Pomeranians are a breed of miniature canines that have a foxlike face, pointy ears and long, fluffy hair. The deputy said Pomeranian attacks are rare.
“Obviously it doesn’t take much to kill a 6-week old baby but it’s not something that happens with that breed,” Solis said. – igorilla.com

“You are ignorant!”

Like the phrase, “educate yourself,” the phrase, “you are ignorant,” is used by pit bull advocates to condemn persons who question or criticize pit bulls. A Google Search for the term, you are ignorant pit bull shows over 180,000 results:

What do you suggest – kill off the species? Kill all dogs?? Nevermind…don’t answer that…I can already guess your answer. I will just ignore such ignorance. Period. – liveyourlife
You sir, are ignorant. Pit bulls do not instinctively go for the jugular vein. They also do not have “Locking Jaws.” I own an American Pit Bull Terrier. I have all the shots and papers to prove it. – thrustedyosocks
I’m so glad you said and did exactly what you said and did, Shorty. That photographer was an ignorant ***hole and I HOPE that everyone sees that and no one wants to work with him again. Hercules is awesome and sweet. – umm

“Petey was a pit bull”

Google this phrase and you’ll get nearly 7,000 results. Pit nutters find this phrase useful as a response to any criticism of pit bulls, but they feel it is especially convincing and appropriate when used as a retort to a story about a pit bull attack, mauling or killing.

Nutters with their own blogs often attempt to elaborate a bit more about just why Petey is supposedly relevant to anything.  As you read on, though, keep in mind that 2 popular TV shows in the 60s and 70s featured “friendly” bears.  Gentle Ben ran from 1967 to 1969 and The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams ran from 1974 to 1978. The two series combined were comprised of 92 episodes and five 2 hour movies with no reported maulings, accidents or deaths caused by the bears.

“Misunderstood”

One of the most overused anthropomorphic terms in the pit bull issue is “misunderstood”. As readers understand, a misunderstanding can only occur between human beings, as it requires human comprehension. The term misunderstood pit bull yields over 91 thousand Google Search results. Maul Talkers use the term to gain sympathy for the breed and to lure members of the public into being “educated” by a pit bull owner.

“A lot of people who are not raised with little people or have never been around them, think they’re nothing but circus acts and so forth. So you get that misunderstanding and you’re not taken serious. It’s the same with pit bulls. – Shorty Rossi, Pit Bull Boss, Animal Planet
