“Use them as pillows”

After the horrific dog mauling death of 21-month old Monica Laminack by her family’s seven pit bulls, relatives told investigators that the toddler often played with the dogs and would “use them as pillows” while watching TV. Google Search results show that Laminack’s relatives are not unique. The term, “use them as pillows,” yet another disturbing pit bull myth rife with dangerous propaganda, is spread across the Internet by numerous Nutters (See related myth: Nanny dog). Authorities anticipate charges against the adults who were home “napping” while the seven pit bulls tore little Monica apart.

“I don’t understand it”

After the catastrophic pit bull mauling of Linda Henry, 54, of Westwego, Louisiana, her boyfriend Clarence Allen said, “I don’t know why they did it … They never had a fight. I don’t understand it.” Three of the couple’s four adult pit bulls ambushed Henry after she walked into her home. The woman lost an eye, ear and both arms to amputation in the horrific assault. The pit bulls also ripped off the entire back portion of her scalp. The response by pit bull owners, “I don’t understand it” is complete denial of well documented pit bull attack traits revealed over and over again in serious and fatal pit bull maulings.

The toddler killed by a family dog in Orange County has been named … Mike Hicks, the victim’s cousin, told reporters, “Friendly dog, I mean, I don’t understand it. Just don’t understand it. Words can’t describe how it happened,” Hicks said. – DogsBite.org

And to add to 26’s posting, how many times have you read in pit bull attack stories that an owner says, “I don’t understand it. He’s always been such a sweet dog”? – LAB
The remarks frequently heard after such an attack “I don’t understand it….he’s always been nice to everyone…..he plays with all the neighborhood children….he’s not an attack dog…..he’s never been abused….” certainly bear that out. “Could not stop it”

After a pet pit bull violently attacked Ryan Maxwell killing him, the owner of the dog, Ashiya Ferguson, emphatically declared: “Oh God, it was so horrible. I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t stop it.” Ferguson is hardly alone in the inability to stop a tenacious pit bull attack, which is Part One of why many communities regulate this dog breed. Part Two is the damage this breed inflicts during its assault. In the case of Ryan Maxwell, the dog clamped onto the boy’s throat and refused to release. The dog was still clamped on when police arrived. As usual, to “disengage” the pit bull, officers had to shoot the dog.

“Oh God, it was so horrible. I couldnʼt stop it. I couldnʼt stop it. I couldnʼt stop it.” While Ashiyah and her sons scrambled to try to free Ryan, Susan called the police. “How do you call someoneʼs mother and explain this?” Ashiyah asked. – Ashiya Ferguson

I even got my pistol and fired the entire clip into the ground next to them … They never missed a beat. – csixer66
I’ve had othwise lovely pits get into dogfights where the owner could not stop the fight no matter how hard they tried….and that includes hitting them with a hose, hitting them with a baseball bad, etc. Sorry, but when pits get into an aggressive fight, there is not much you can do to stop them. – DuikesMum

“Pit bull just snapped”

This term is often used by persons who witness or experience a violent, unpredictable pit bull attack. Unfortunately, there are decades of documented evidence about the dangerous unpredictability of pit bulls (fighting dogs). Part of the unpredictability of an attack by a pit bull is that the breed often fails to show warning signals, such as a growl, bark or direct stare prior to its attack. Pit Nutters like to “educate” readers that “pit bulls never snap.” There are always warning signals they claim — AKA blame the dog owner or the victim.

After a family pit bull “snapped” in Rochester and attacked its owner, the owner admitted this was the second time the pit bull snapped. “The owners said the dog ‘just snapped,’ something that had happened once before, after the animal delivered a litter of pups.” – Darwinian pit bull owner

“Itʼs all just horrible. Itʼs all still horrible,” Ashiyah said. “Iʼm not going to question anything. I was responsible for that child. I loved that child. And now heʼs dead. Heʼs dead because my dog snapped and did something I had never, ever seen in him do before.” – Ashiyah Ferguson

“Superior thinkers”

Part of the perceived expert phenomenon cultivated by pit bull lovers is expressed by this group believing that they are superior dog owners and superior thinkers. For instance, in  late April, Peter D sent a classic email into DogsBite.org with the subject line “error.” The Working to Help Animals blog wrote about it too. All of us had a howling good laugh over it!

I was reading DogsBite.org Releases 3-Year Fatality Study: U.S. Dog Bite Fatalities January 2006 to December 2008 and again the statement , “The report covers a 3-year period — from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2008” and I noticed the dates Jan. 1 2006 to Dec. 31, 2008, only encompass a 2 year period

“Magical rehabilitation”

Magical rehabilitation describes pit bull owners, rescuers and trainers who claim to quickly “cure” a pit bull — eliminating the dog’s aggressive traits — after a serious mauling. A perfect example of magical rehabilitation occurred after James Harrison’s pit bull, who mauled three people in a single attack (a triple mauler), and within 20 days, was “cured” and ready for adoption by the public.

Somehow between May 30 and June 20 (about 20 days), the triple mauling dog now named Duke has been magically “rehabilitated” by Mary Kay Kain. The animal has gone from being a pit bull to an “American Bandogge Mastiff” and from being a triple mauler to a dog that “loves to sit back in your lap and get belly rubs and kisses on his head.”  – DogsBite.org

“Just a ‘lap dog'”

To emphasize positive traits depicted by pit bulls, Maul Talkers often say that the animal is just a “lap dog”. As an anonymous poster from the Craven Desires blog points out, any dog that wants to be “right on top of you” is possibly displaying dominance, which is “anything but cute or sweet”.

They are wonderful cuddlers and love nothing more than a belly rub. In fact, most pit bulls think they are lap dogs! – Pit bull rescue central
I’m really a lap dogPit bull positive
This breed needs to be taught to sit and greet people calmly as it’s natural inclination will probably be to climb into their lap, put a paw on each of their shoulders, and attempt to wipe their face off with it’s tongue. Attempts to convince a full grown pit bull that it is too big to be a “lap dog” … – Pit bulls on the web
Another behavior that pit nutters constantly rave about is how their dogs just want to be “lap dogs“. “Oh, if you’re sitting down, he just wants to be right on top of you.” No shit, Sherlock. That’s also dominance behavior, and it’s anything but cute or sweet. – Anonymous

“Perfect storm”

A “perfect storm” is used to describe a hypothetical hurricane that results in the worst possible damage imaginable. Author Sebastian Junger coined the term after learning about the confluence of three different weather-related phenomenon called the “perfect situation.” A “perfect storm” typically strikes once in a century — truly a rare event. We believe Randall Lockwood, a senior vice-president of the ASPCA, was the first to use the term “perfect storm” to describe a fatal pit bull mauling. He did so in a 2006 article by Malcom Gladwell. Lockwood’s presumptions have a basis in fatal pit bull attacks from the 1980s and have little if any relevance today. Further, the rate of fatal pit bull attacks in the United States today occurs on average every 19 days. Hardly once in a century.

“A fatal dog attack is not just a dog bite by a big or aggressive dog,” Lockwood went on. “It is usually a perfect storm of bad human-canine interactions—the wrong dog, the wrong background, the wrong history in the hands of the wrong person in the wrong environmental situation. I’ve been involved in many legal cases involving fatal dog attacks, and, certainly, it’s my impression that these are generally cases where everyone is to blame. You’ve got the unsupervised three-year-old child wandering in the neighborhood killed by a starved, abused dog owned by the dogfighting boyfriend of some woman who doesn’t know where her child is. It’s not old Shep sleeping by the fire who suddenly goes bonkers. Usually there are all kinds of other warning signs.” – Randall Lockwood

After the publication of Gladwell’s piece, other Nutters began using the phrase.

Dr. Randy Lockwood of HSUS called it “…a perfect storm…”, and I have to agree. A fatal dog attack is the result of a conglomeration of many things, all joining up in one perfect storm that goes directly against thousands of years of physical and social evolution.  – Jim Crosby (See: The Crosby Analysis)
She added that the dog’s breed isn’t the most important factor. “Usually it’s a perfect storm situation, with a lot of things that lead up to the attack,” Hetts said. – Suzanne Hetts
Extensive research and investigation has conclusively identified the ownership/management practices that are at the root of the rare, but perfect storm when a dog becomes dangerous. – 00kat00
Pit bulls already are known to be an aggressive breed, and the tethering makes them more defensive of their turf, experts said. “It was a perfect storm,” said Marti Ryan, a spokeswoman for Hillsborough County Animal Services. – Marti Ryan
In many cases, the dogs that end up killing have a history of bites prior to the kill, and in some cases, there are NO prior offenses of aggression and the perfect storm of events has formed and thus, an unexpected bite or fatal bite. – Leigh Siegfried

“Freak accident”

Owners of pit bulls often say after a serious or fatal pit bull attack that it was a “freak accident”. Google News Archives shows clear results of this when typing in the terms: freak accident pit bull. The term has been in continuous use by pit bull owners since 1985, after Wally Robert’s pit bull, named Napoleon, killed Deborah Pernell while she slept. The phrase is a complete denial of responsibility. Such occurrences are neither freak nor accidental when involving pit bulls. The fact that parents of victimized children and police authorities 25-years later still call such attacks “freak accidents” is regrettable and untrue.

A woman died in a New York City office building after lift doors dragged her upwards and crushed her.
Officials say the woman, identified as advertising agency employee Suzanne Hart, was attempting to enter the lift when her foot or leg became caught.

“Media hysteria”

Maul Talkers often say that pit bulls are the victims of “media hysteria”. A Google Search on the terms: media hysteria pit bull yields 14,000 results. It’s the media that makes life miserable for pit bulls; it’s the media that has damaged the breed; it’s the media that creates hysteria about pit bulls… According to Maul Talkers, the only time the media reports (or identifies) a pit bull correctly is when it is a “positive pit bull” article. In any other context, such as a serious or fatal pit bull mauling, the media erroneously identified the dog and once again victimized pit bulls.

The continuing media hysteria generated by bad press and bad owners – Rescueeverydog.org
Breed Specific Legislation and Media Hysteria Make life Miserable for Pit Bull Owners – Pitbulllovers.com
Could have been ANY breed of dog that ‘attacked’ you, BUT since it was a PitBull AND media hysteria, YOU don’t blame THE OWNER. Shame on you. – Onekingstar

The truth about the media is that they report gore and death, and pit bulls rarely fail to deliver. Pit bulls are also the subject of berserking incidents, when a single pit bull attacks and seriously injures multiple people. The media traditionally reports such dramatic events. Back when rabies killed many people, the media reported dramatic headlines like, “FIGHT WITH A MAD DOG.; Policeman Kills It While Its Teeth Are Buried in His Leg.” There was a reason for this too. A bite by a rabid dog without treatment meant a horrible death by hydrophobia.
