A three-time mauler is a pit bull that has mauled three human beings over a period of time. A three-time mauler does not indicate “three bites”; it indicates three serious attacks resulting in serious injury. A “triple mauler” is pit bull that attacks and injures three people in the same incident, such as Jame’s Harrison’s triple mauler, Patron.

Three-time maulers are difficult to detect. After each mauling incident, the dog may be “shuffled” to a new county or across state lines, thus losing its bite history. Some pit bull rescue groups purposely “shuffle” dangerous dogs out of their jurisdiction for this reason and are primarily to blame for the existence of three-time maulers.
